My name is Katelyn Fraser and I am in my third year of teaching grade 5/6 at Killara Primary School in Sunbury, Victoria. I live with my partner and our baby Maltese X, Arj Barker, who was named after the comedian. Book Week

This week is Book Week!

We have been exploring our favourite books and voting for the winners in the Book of the Year competition.

Today, we dressed up as our favourite book characters. Our whole school gathered in the gym this morning and had a parade to show off our costumes.

Who is your favourite book character and why? Can you recommend a book for others to read?


Over the last 5 weeks of Term 2, we participated in a dance program called STOMP. The program is part of our P.E. and Performing Arts curriculum.

Each week, we were taught a different dance in only 50 minutes! In the final session, we learnt a seven minute long dance that was a mash-up of many different songs.

Lately we have been looking at different types of poems. We have looked at Haikus, Limericks & Diamante poems. We have picked our best poem to publish and share.

Courage for Callum

On Thursday, our school was taken over by superheroes!

The whole school came dressed as their favourite superhero for a special reason. We were raising money for one of our students in grade Prep who has neuroblastoma – a nasty form of childhood cancer.

Callum is in our Prep Buddy class so we tried to get behind the cause.

The school also took donations for Callum and his family to help make their life easier. There was face painting on the day and even Mrs Hurley dressed up! (We’re still not sure who Sailor Moon is but we believe her when she tells us she was a very convincing Sailor Moon…) We also had a special sausage sizzle lunch.

We had a great day and hope that our efforts will help make Callum and his family’s life a little easier.

Sea Turtle Skype

Last Wednesday, we had a Skype session with Alistair from Gnaraloo Wilderness Foundation. Gnaraloo is located in Western Australia, on the coast to the north of Perth.

Alistair told us about the conservation efforts of the Gnaraloo Wilderness Foundation. They are trying to protect the landscape, flora and fauna of Gnaraloo and to educate others to do the same.

We learnt about the different types of sea turtles (there are 7), how to tell them apart and why they have their name. For example, The Green Sea Turtle is called that because of the colour it would make when it was turned into a soup! Other names, like the Leatherback, are named after the turtle’s appearance.

We talking about the dangers to sea turtles, such as pollution and fishing lines and we now know that we can help to protect the sea turtles by doing the following:

  • Always recycle and make sure our rubbish goes in the bin!
  • Don’t use lights on beaches
  • Don’t let our parents drive on beaches, as this could damage the nests the turtles have made
  • Spreading the word to our family and friends!

Australian Immigration Incursion

On Tuesday, we had an incursion at school to help us learn more about Australian immigration. We looked at significant events in history that lead to groups of people migrating to Australia – for example, during the Gold Rush, many people from China came to Australia and after the Vietnam War, Australia took in many Vietnamese refugees.

We ordered these events – from as early as the first settlers and convicts to modern immigration – to make a human timeline.

Then we broke into groups to complete 4 different tasks. For one task, we reconstructed graphs showing migrant populations in different cities and other immigration statistics.

We also put together jigsaw puzzles to find out about which countries take in the most refugees.

We played “Famous Australian Migrants” Bingo and tested each other on the citizenship test. Most of us would have failed the test and not been allowed to live in Australia.

Immigration Questions

Lately, we have been looking at how immigration has shaped Australia and its culture. We had to create questions for people in our lives who had come to Australia to find out about their journey.

Here are some of the questions we asked. We would love it if you yourself have come to Australia and could answer these questions too!

  1. Where is your home country?
  2. What was the main reason that you left your country?
  3. What was the hardest thing about leaving your country? Did you leave anyone behind?
  4. What was it like in your home country? What is different about living in Australia?
  5. Was it hard to assimilate into Australia culture?
  6. Did you speak another language in your home country? Was it difficult to learn English?
  7. Did you live in another country before settling in Australia?

Strategies for Addition and Subtraction

Lately, we have been working on our addition and subtraction strategies. We also worked on estimation and rounding games to practice building our mental strategies.

Making Connections

In class, we have been practising making connections when we read.

We can make Text-to-Self, Text-to-Text and Text-to-World connections.

We have been reading picture story books in class and practising making deep connections instead of surface connections. We read the book ‘Elephant Man’ and made the surface connection that:

Joseph Merrick was sad like Riley in the movie ‘Inside Out’.

We changed this surface connection into a deep connection:

Joseph Merrick was feeling sad and abandoned when the Austrian took all of his money. This is similar to the character Riley in ‘Inside Out’ when she is running away from home and is on the bus alone

Today, we read the book ‘Flight’ by Nadia Wheatley and made connections to the Syrian refugees, people without homes and our own families.

What is your favourite picture story book that we can read together and practise making connections to?

Mystery Skype

On Wednesday morning, students in 5/6G participated in a Mystery Skype. Mrs Hurley knew which class we were Skyping with but couldn’t tell us where they were.

Mystery Skyping is where two classes come together without knowing which school or where in the world the other class is. Each class takes turns to ask closed questions to narrow down the location of the other class. If you ask a question and receive a ‘No’ response, then it is the other class’ turn to ask a question.

Before we skyped, we talked about the general types of questions we could ask to narrow down the other class’ location. We decided the the best way to firstly narrow it down was to ask “Are you in the Southern hemisphere?”

There are different roles for everyone in the class so that we can all participate. We really enjoyed learning this way. We got to practise our skills in communication, geography, collaboration and ICT.

On the 22/3/17 we did a mystery skype.

This our the jobs people did Photographer, google mapper, tweeter runners, answers, questioners, filters, greeter, and think tankers.

The school was called Mernda primary school.

The mystery skype started of with a funny start they started of mute.

They found us in less than 10 –15 minutes because someone turned around and showed our school name. In the end we found out that it was Chris’ from last year! He left our school and went to an other school in Mernda.
